Recreation Center Gets a Facelift
Looking for a modernized rec center with all the bells and whistles? Look no further! The West Charlotte Recreation Center is in the process of getting a whole new look and feel with a nearly $1.5 million renovation, and is slated to reopen in early January.
“We are proud of what we are offering to the community and we hope everyone will take advantage of this great new facility, “said Jeff Carwile, Recreation Manager, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department.
Carwile said the new center is not what you would expect a recreation center of the past to look like. The building is undergoing a complete overhaul – the first major renovation since originally opening in 1964 – and will feature something for everyone.
The center is located next to West Charlotte High School, and serves as a great place for afterschool programs and kids and teens to hang out. The multipurpose rooms are going from one to two, offering more space for community members to congregate. And, there’s even a game room! But it’s not just for the youth. The West Charlotte Rec Center team is working with Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services to offer a senior nutrition program out of the facility’s brand new kitchen.
For those looking to break a sweat (18 and over…), the expanded and renovated fitness center and weight room will be a state-of-the-art haven for healthy healthy habits to last a lifetime. The non-traditional weight room will focus on conventional fitness and offer boot camp-style classes, and the gym will even have a brand-new floor! Come on out, basketball fanatics.
Believe it or not, this is just one of the many facilities or parks getting an update in our fast-growing Mecklenburg County. The Aquatic center recently reopened after an $9.3 million renovation and Marion Diehl Recreation Center now offers a playground for all ages and was even featured in the Wall Street Journal last month about Playgrounds for an Aging Population. Pretty cool, right? We would say Charlotte and Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation has DEFINITELY got a lot!
Programming, schedules and a re-opening date for the West Charlotte Recreation Center are still in the works. Stay tuned!
