With more than 200 parks, playgrounds, ball fields, pools, rec centers, and facilities on more than 21,000 acres, there’s a better than average chance you’ve played, partied, or somehow participated with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation. You may have taken the kids to the playground, enjoyed some disc golf, walked on a greenway, or exercised at a water aerobics class. But did you know? You can do your own thing, if you will, at many reservable spaces within Mecklenburg County parks!
Far from quaint, rustic picnic shelters (but that’s an option, as well!) renovations are nearly complete at facilities in Hornet’s Nest Park and Veterans Park. Both shelter renovations will include a meeting space with new tables and chairs for 150+ people, and a catering kitchen with an ice maker, sinks, microwaves, warming cabinet and refrigerator. Along with the great gathering space, meeting and event capabilities, these updated and upgraded shelters will feature big lobbies, brand new restrooms and outdoor patio space with lots of lush landscaping.
Hornet’s Nest Park off Beatties Ford Road provides a rural, remote feel, but this popular park is only a 15-minute drive up Interstate 77 from uptown Charlotte. Historically, one of the big draws to this park has been the BMX racetrack. It’s quite impressive to see, and a little intimidating to think of rolling over the big jumps! But there’s lots more to Hornet’s Nest Park, including softball fields, an 18-hole disc golf course, lighted tennis courts, and walking trails that are often full of people out enjoying the weather on a sunny afternoon. Reservable facilities include the newly-renovated Shelter #1, tennis courts, and Hornet’s Next Picnic Barn. And don’t miss the incredible new NFL Play60 playground!
In the heart of Charlotte’s Plaza-Midwood neighborhood is where you’ll find Veterans Park. In addition to sports fields and tennis courts this park has a feature that’s sure to make quite a splash in warmer weather! The park’s spray ground is one of its most popular features, but we’re sure the new modern shelter space being built within steps of the playground and parking will make waves, too! Even with the weather cooling, construction is wrapping-up and landscaping is going down at what’s sure to be one of the hottest spots to reserve for events, reunions, meetings, and more.
